young at art  presents custom hand-painted wall murals for the young at heart...
What better way to inspire the imagination of a child than to put beautiful, creative images on the walls they see everyday?

Young At Heart specializes in custom hand-painted children’s wall murals for nurseries, children’s rooms, preschools, daycares, and child-related businesses.

These themed walls encourage imagination and delight children of all ages. Children love to point and identify the animals, subjects and scenes depicted in a mural. As your children grow, the mural art reflects back what they love most about the world — real and imagined. Some murals may even be painted for “young at heart” adults without children! When a client commissions a mural, a consultation is scheduled, and ideas are exchanged, as are fabric samples, color samples, and the style of furniture. All these are taken into consideration in creating your one of a kind piece of art. All designs are done freehand.

Stimulate your child’s imagination and transform your child’s room into a comforting, magical place today! Contact us for more information:

Questions and Answers

Q: I don’t know what I want, can you help?

A: Yes, during your free mural consultation, I will look at the space you want for your artwork and will be able to give some suggestions; also, sometimes the child is a geyser of ideas. If you are still stumped, I would suggest brainstorming with cards, stickers, magazines, fabrics, or accessories (bedding, curtains, or furniture) to help you to pick a basic theme for a room.

Q: What happens during the mural consultation?

A: Once we have established a theme or basic direction, then I look at the room, the furniture, the plans and I offer ideas. You provide feedback and let me know if I am on the right track. Once we have the major concepts worked out, I make a sketch of the best idea(s) and quote you a price for the mural based on the concept(s). At this point I often start a list of the details the client wants to have included in the mural (plant/animal species, colors etc.) Many of the smallest details work their way in spontaneously when I am actually painting.

Q: What kind of paint do you use? Is it toxic? Does it smell? How long does it take to dry? Will the paint come off when I need to wash the wall? Do you put a coating over the painting when finished?

A: Acrylic, water-based paint is what is usually used for murals. I prefer Baer’s Disney line of paint. This paint is a quality, non-toxic, safe paint to use for your child’s room. The paint will not leave a smell. Depending upon the size of the mural, this paint generally dries very quickly, within just a few short hours. Yes, once the paint has dried, you may wash the walls all you want. I suggest a semi to high-gloss paint, this paint withstands a fair amount of abuse. I do not put a coating over the painting, if a semi to high gloss paint is used, a coating is not necessary.

Q: How long does a mural take?

A: This depends on the size of mural, subject, and the complexity of the design. Sketching and painting foreground elements over the existing solid colored background may take a day, and a full wall mural (8x10) would take 3-5 days. Most people are amazed how quickly the painting goes.

Q: Do I need to prepare the walls myself?

A: Yes, ideally, if you paint the wall the necessary base color beforehand, it will save you money and me some time. Often I design the concept around the existing wall color.

Q: If we need to paint over the painting in the future, how is this done?

A: When you need a change, just paint over the mural. It may take an extra coat, but there should be no problem in covering over the art.

Q: How much do you charge?

A: I charge $17/hour for the time it takes me to sketch the ideas for your mural and $20/hour for the time that it takes me to paint your mural with a minimum request of 4 hours total. Further, once the sketches have been drawn up, I will request that a deposit of 50% of the quoted fee for the contracted work be given up front (in order to purchase some supplies and confirm our deal and ink your spot in my calendar) and the other half be given upon completion.

Q: How do I contact you?

A: I can be contacted by phone or by email. I live in the Huntington Beach area and can generally make my way over to your home or place of business within a 30 mile radius within a few days to give a free estimate and consultation.
